From Sanitation Crisis to Renewable Power

Dr. George Joseph Themplangad first confronted a major public health and sanitation issue in India: human faecal waste being discharged directly onto railway tracks.

After a long and persistent campaign, significant progress was achieved through the adoption of Green Bio-Toilets on Indian Railways — helping prevent untreated human waste from being dumped onto tracks across the country.

Having helped address the sanitation problem, Dr. George now proposes the next step:

Converting faecal matter into electricity.

Instead of treating human waste as a disposal burden, it can be treated as a renewable energy resource.

The Core Vision

The same faecal matter that was once polluting railway tracks can now:
• Be processed to generate methane
• Be converted into electricity
• Reduce water consumption from conventional flush systems
• Help address groundwater contamination
• Create decentralized and centralized clean energy systems

This model not only improves sanitation but also creates sustainable power.

Electricity generated from human waste can supplement existing energy systems, and similar waste streams from other locations can also be harnessed to produce renewable electricity.

What was once a public health liability can become a national asset.

Why This Matters

India urgently needs:
• Cleaner sanitation systems
• Water conservation
• Renewable energy sources
• Sustainable infrastructure

Electricity powers AI, IT, transportation, industry, and modern society. Transforming faecal matter into energy represents a practical and scalable solution that addresses multiple national challenges at once.

This is not merely waste management.
It is resource transformation.

Project Opportunities

Potential Pilot Locations:
• BHEL, Trichy (Tamil Nadu)
• Large captive population
• Land availability
• Institutional stability
• Interest in electricity generation
• Manipal University, India
• Research, demonstration, and operational unit potential
• Strong academic environment

Dr. George has conducted site visits and preliminary feasibility assessments at these locations.

Inspiration & National Development

Dr. George credits Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam as a key inspiration in pursuing technological innovation for national development.

Electricity from renewable, continuously available organic matter represents a long-term solution that can serve humanity sustainably.
